For Christmas, my mother gave me and Hubby a fun board game, "Are you Smarter than a 5th Grader?" Not having had TV for more than 4 years, I hadn't heard of the game show before this.
It says it is for ages eight and older so we invite the older boys to join us. Since we have a current 5th grader, we let him start the game. He did the 5th grade questions first and got them correct. Then, there was a 3rd grade science question: "How fast does light travel in one second?" We all looked at each other, chucked, and wrote down our answers. Oldest son got it wrong. We checked the answer, we all got it wrong. Oldest son got very mad and quit the game. Now, when we talk about the game, he just comments that he isn't smarter than a 3rd grader and can't play the game. I keep pointing out that we all missed that question, even Dad, who is a science fan.
Having played the game several times now, we discovered a few things. For Hubby and myself, science is our forte. Social studies is our bane. While Hubby sticks to geography, science and math, I venture out into art, music and literature as well as science. I'm terrible at grammar. I'm hoping one day to get Oldest Son back into the game with us, but he is such a sore looser, I'm not sure I want to go there again or not.
I've been thinking about Homeschooling again. Our school district isn't the greatest and I'm concerned about the things they aren't learning at school. So, last night we talk to the kids. They all said no, even our 5 year old who hasn't started school yet. Shoot me down. Well, millions of kids go through public school and do just fine. I guess mine will too. I'm still concerned though....

Nothing to say
We had such a fun Christmas. I'm always so sad when Christmas is over. I love the holiday time. I love the music, the decorations, the lights, the feeling, the excitement, the food!
Since Christmas, we have hung out around the house, playing and enjoying the days off. It is hard for me to believe the cold, winter weather that the rest of the US seems to be in, because it is sunny here. The days leading up to Christmas, Christmas Day and a few days following have had wonderful weather, in the 50's and 60's. Today is colder, the 30's, but it doesn't feel quite so cold. We went out and just wore jackets.
I've been trying to write in my journal about the holidays. This, being Peanut's 1st Christmas, was especially important to write it down. She got her 8th tooth in and is starting to stand on her own. She is getting better and she sees it more as a game than anything else. She put on a show for her Grandparents on Christmas. It was pretty funny. She would crawl around, squealing and then she would pose with one leg in the air. What a show-off.
Well, not much else going on. I hope your days are as nice as mine.

Lost in the kitchen
Moving is tough. Moving into a new kitchen is really tough. You have to arrange everything in a new way because the kitchen you move into is never the same as the kitchen you left. I am in the holiday mood and have been baking a lot. It is forcing me to learn my kitchen, but you should have seen me yesterday. Where did I put the bread pans? I couldn't remember. This kitchen is bigger than my last one and I had to search through several cupboards before I found them. Then I needed my big mixing bowl. I couldn't find it. I looked through all of the cupboards. What had I done with it? Then I looked up. It was sitting on top of the cupboards. I didn't put it there, Hubby did. He's 6' 1", he is tall and can reach the top. I can't. I had to get a chair. I told him not to do that with the stuff I use a lot. This is a big kitchen with lots of cupboard space. We don't need to store stuff on top anymore, like we did with the last kitchen. Still, he puts things up there. He told me that if I need something down, all I have to do is ask. Well, that's great except for when he is at work!
So, I'm learning my way around the kitchen. I don't know if I've got things arrange in the best way, but for now it's working and with it, I'm producing some super tasty things.

Christmas is how soon??
So I was reading another friend's blog and her blog had a ticker for days until Christmas. It said there is 10 days left! What? It can't be true?
Where has all the time gone?
Well, 10 days is 10 days and I can do a lot in 10 days, if my baby lets me. Unfortunately, every time I move or even look like I'm going to move from one spot to another, she starts to scream at me. It makes it hard for me to get much of anything done. Still, 10 days.
Unfortunately, with 10 days to go and a phobia of going to the post office during the Christmas season, presents to family and friends will most likely be late. Sorry.
I have accomplished a few things, I made 2 batches of gingersnap cookies and some fudge. I made up plates of goodies and we went caroling to a few new friends here. It was fun and I got to meet and know some really nice people.
My ego was a little shot going to these homes of these nice people. Several of them had huge 10-12 foot trees, glowing with lights and ornaments that matched. One lady had an enormous wreath hanging over her fireplace that matched her tree. I look at my little scrawny 6 foot artificial tree. It only has three strands of lights and one two of those strands, only half of the lights are working. It is all the lights we had that matched. Our ornaments are mostly handmade, none of them match, and about half of them are made out of paper. The star on our tree is a gift wrap bow.
Well, our tree has personality and I can tell you a story about just about every single ornament hanging off of it. I wish it had some more lights, but yep, I like our tree. Maybe someday I'll have that fancy tree where the ornaments match, but for now, my kids are proud of the tree they decorated with the ornaments they made.
One ornament is a reindeer made from a large Christmas light bulb, googly eyes, a puff nose, and pipe cleaner horns. We've named him Seymour. Seymour has a brother, who looks a lot like him, but has one googly eye. We named him Bob. Yes, we are full of personality!

Trimming the Tree
Last night we decorated our Christmas tree. That is always a fun time. Our tree is little artificial tree we bought around 7 years ago. My husband had always disliked artificial trees, but seven years ago we were living in Hawaii and the real trees you bought from the tree lots were quite old by the time they made it to Hawaii. It was a bit of a fire hazard. I also didn't like cleaning those needles constantly.
So, we have our 6 foot artificial tree and it has served us well.
I always do the lights first. The past few years we've had multicolored lights on the tree, but this year, it's blue. After I finished the lights, I pulled out the decorations and let the kids go at it.
We have 6 small nutcracker ornaments. For some reason, my kids love those. So, last night when they put the nutcrackers on the tree, they grouped them all together on one branch. That way the nutcrackers can chat with each other. It's funny to see all those ornaments clumped together like that in the middle of the tree. Eventually, I'll find a few dinosaurs surrounding the nutcrackers in the tree, thanks to my oldest son. He likes to pretend that the dinosaurs attack the nutcrackers. Apparently the nutcrackers have had one dino-encounter casualty, one of them is missing his legs.
We have a Miss Piggy ornament and a Kermit the Frog ornament. To Piggy's delight and Kermit's dismay, they are always placed near each other on the tree.
There are many wooden ornaments on the tree that I painted myself my first Christmas after getting married. Those get hung up. I have no artistic talent, even when I'm painting in the lines.
There are a few ornaments from my childhood. I like seeing them. One is a cross stitch I did when I was seven. It is my favorite. I remember making that ornament. It was my first cross stitch project and it turned me onto a life long love of cross stitching.
The disco balls. Early in our marriage, Hubby and I discovered we loved to dance to disco music! Several years ago we found disco ball ornaments. We bought a bunch and I love seeing those on the tree. Some day I want to do a tree with nothing but blue lights and disco balls. That would be awesome.
So, now, our tree is up. This morning, Peanut went to explore the tree. We made sure to place a few soft and non-breakable ornaments down low that she could play with them. Instead, she tried to pull herself up and she ended up pulling the entire tree down on top of herself. I laughed, but she was pretty upset. Ornaments were strewn all over the floor. Thank goodness nothing is breakable on our tree. She hasn't gone near it since. I hope she has learned her lesson.

mountains
The mountains where we are are really stunning in their own desert way. From my kitchen window I have a very nice view of one of the mountains. I love it. This particular mountain is in the middle of the range I'm going to attempt to describe.
This middle mountain, and I don't know if it has a name, is what I would describe as a typical mountain. It is tall and long. It is very majestic looking. The mountain immediately to it's south has a whole other look. It looks like organ pipes are rising out of the mountain. A very different type of erosion happened there. To the north of the middle mountain is a set of mountains that look like huge sand dunes, like the wind pushed the rocks up the mountains. It is very much like a sand dune, but it is the size of a mountain and made of rock, not sand.
Such three very different geological rock formations right next to each other. It is incredible to look at. I absolutely love it. Ever since I was a little girl, I wanted to live where mountains were. Of course, I wanted to go to Colorado and live among the amazing Rocky Mountains there, but where I am is just a more southern version of that great chain of mountains. I'm so happy to see them out my windows.

Back
Well, we made it to our new home in New Mexico. We got here Saturday night, and got the Internet running yesterday. Our household good arrives on Friday, but it won't be unloaded until Saturday.
We are sleeping on air mattresses, eating at a folding table a friend in a near by city let us borrow and listening to our voices echo in the empty house.
The trip was good and we enjoyed seeing my sister and her family and my parents along the way. I'm glad the trip went as well as it did because things have really not been good since getting here. Peanut, who is 8 months old today, got very sick on Saturday night. A stomach bug of some sort with lots of throwing up. By Sunday night she had passed her bug onto my oldest and youngest sons. By Monday, Princess and son #2 had it as well. Monday night, Hubby got it. I was the very lucky one. I felt pretty queasy on Monday, but I figured it was from seeing, smelling and cleaning up many throw up disasters during the day. I made two trips the the laundry mat that day. I need to do another, desperately. I'll be so glad when Saturday comes and we have our washer and dryer hooked up. The laundry mat gets expensive when you are running loads for this many people as well as all the sleeping bags that have been puked on.
Today is Wednesday. I took the boys to their new schools. My oldest goes to one elementary that serve grades 3-5 and then my second son goes to a different school (right next door) that serves grades K-2. I think my oldest son is the only white kid in his class. He is certainly the only blond! My other son has one other white kid in his class. We are defiantly the minority. It's pretty funny. It makes it easy for me to pick out my kids among their classmates.
So, we are going to relax a bit this morning now that the boys are in school. Poor Peanut is still quite sick and having a hard time keeping anything down. She is doing better today and I hope she is on the upswing. She has lost weight, I can feel it when I pick her up. Poor baby. I feel so bad for her. When she wakes up, we will be making another trip to the laundry mat. We are out of towels and three of our sleeping bags need to be cleaned as well.
I am hoping that next week will be better. Our stuff will be here and we can try and make this house our home. We will be able to decorate for Christmas and that will be fun. I'll have my washing machine and that will be good. And I hope Peanut will be well again. Our house has no carpet, only hard tiled floors. It makes it hard for her to crawl around and play.
Enough of the bad, things can only get better and they will!

Going offline
Today is my last day with the computer up and running. The movers packed most everything yesterday and loaded half of the stuff and house into the first container. They will return tomorrow for the other half. That means tonight I take the computer apart. Oh the joys.
Several things got packed that I didn't mean to. Oh well. It is hard to think about everything you need when the small kids underfoot keep distracting you. Thankfully, the movers left the TV and VCR alone. Kids can watch movies while I work on cleaning and organizing the stuff today.
Peanut loves the stairs and she can climb them like a pro. The problem is, I don't want her to climb them. Should she fall, it's a long way down to a concrete floor at the bottom. I spend a lot of time keeping an eye on her. Last night, she got hold of my cell phone, put it up to the side of her face and started "talking". Her favorite sounds right now is the hard "g" sound, so we hear ga, goo, and aga a lot. She is too funny with the phone. She got a hold of the phone again later and just tried to eat it, like normal.
Well, I've got too much to do to hang out any longer. I don't want to do anything, but we leave tomorrow and the old To Do list is long.
Later all, when I get back on, I'll be in New Mexico! Happy Thanksgiving!

Panic
Well, I'm in something of a panic. The movers come tomorrow. Am I ready? NO
Suitcases need to be packed, pillows need to be collected, extra formula needs to be stashed, I need to calm down. I'm not sure what entirely I'm panicking over. We will all be in our new home in New Mexico by December 1. Our stuff arrives on the 5th. So, us and everything will all be together again in a few weeks and really, anything I forget to pack can be bought along the way if it is truly essential. No worries, right?
So, today I've been packing and working on projects. At one I get a call asking if someone can come over between two and three to see the house (it's up for sale again). I said yes and started cleaning my laundry, toys, and beds. The 3 year old had some chips today and dumped a good deal of them into the living room floor. The baby was asleep. I waited as long as I could. By 1:45 I vacuumed and didn't care if it woke up the baby or not. I didn't pay attention to the time after that and just as I was ready to take the vacuum up the stairs, a knock came at the door, it was the people there to see the house. I ushered the kids out and just as I was ready to get myself into the car, the realtor and her person left. A very short tour. I hope that's not bad, but I'm guessing if you only spend two minutes in the house, you probably weren't impressed. I don't know. I took the time to run errands.
Tomorrow will be crazy. I'll be glad when this week is over - very glad.

Funny kids
Today is my Princess's 5th birthday and let me tell you, it has been quite the day!
She has been talking about her birthday constantly for a week. When she woke up, she got to open 2 presents. One of them was a Gabriella dress (from HSM) that I got on Halloween clearance. She loved it. Of course, she wore it for the party. Well, part of the party. During the party, she went up to her room and changed into another dress. Later she opened presents and received a Hannah Montana dress (another Halloween clearance item). She ran up and changed. Later, they decided to go outside to jump on the trampoline. It has been raining for 3 days plus all morning. It was wet. She didn't want her new dress wet, so she changed again into some sweat pants and a t-shirt. Before the party was over, she changed back again into the Hannah Montana outfit. I haven't been up to her room yet, but I'm guessing it is a big clothes mess. The really funny thing is she doesn't know who Hannah Montana is. We don't have TV, so she has never seen the show, but have you ever walked through Wal-Mart with a 4 year old who points out Hannah M every time she sees it? You will find, Hannah M is on EVERY single aisle! I'm serious. All my daughter knows is Hannah is everywhere, she is blond (like my daughter) wears a lot of pink or is on a lot of pink items, and she usually is holding a microphone. My daughter is smart enough to know that means she is a singer. That's all it takes, blond, pink, microphone - daughter loves her!
So, this evening at dinner, the newly 5 year old girl announces to me, "I know what malady means." Really? "It means they belong together." OK. Confused? So am I.
She also got a Barbie today that didn't have a name or anything. My daughter decided to name her Jackal. Can we call her Jackie for short? She decided later she would re-name her and she is now Jeannie. Much better.
Did I mention the Hannah Montana pinata we did today? After we got it opened and the little kids collected their candy, my 10 year old went to town with the bat and the Hannah M pinata. You can be sure, there wasn't much left after he was done. Let me say, Happy Birthday to you, my daughter, but I'm glad it is over!

continuing to stay busy
My days are slipping past me fast. I don't know where the time is going. My to do list is a mile long and each day I think of more things that need to be done before I leave. The movers arrive on Tuesday. They will work Tuesday and Thursday. This week has also had a lot of social activities that I've had to attend, which takes away from my work time, but it has been nice to spend time with people I love before leaving.
Saturday is my daughter's birthday. She will be five. She is so interesting to look at. I look at her and realize she is tall, and has the face of a child, not the face of a toddler. She loves to talk! She loves to sing and perform, and while she loves to be the center of attention, she doesn't demand it. She loves High School Musical, princesses, writing letters, keeping Peanut entertained, and talking. She can be bossy, sassy, and unhelpful. She has the potential to do anything she wants in life. I worry constantly about her and at the same time, I have no worries about her, if that makes any sense.
Well, the to do list is long and it's not about to get any shorter with me sitting here. Yesterday I painted the hallway. It had a horrid, faded wallpaper. I hate wallpaper! This house was covered in it, and it has all be the original wallpaper to this house, 30 years old! I hope Peanut cooperates today.
Saturday is my daughter's birthday. She will be five. She is so interesting to look at. I look at her and realize she is tall, and has the face of a child, not the face of a toddler. She loves to talk! She loves to sing and perform, and while she loves to be the center of attention, she doesn't demand it. Birthday time!
Today is my youngest son's birthday. He is three. It's been a tough three years with him. He hasn't been happy to be a part of this world. Still, he has some wonderful qualities. He has the sweetest laugh and it is still so genuine. He only laughs when something is really funny. He loves to work in his "workbook". Years ago, when my oldest was three, I got a Kindergarten homeschool workbook. Each kid has colored in it over the years. Now my youngest son has it and it is HIS. Don't mess with it. He loves to work in it and he is working very hard at his coloring.
He told me yesterday he was 14. Fourteen is his new favorite number. If you ask him how many toys he is holding or how many chicken nuggets is on his plate, he will tell you fourteen.
I've been calling this boy Toddler in blog land, but he needs a new name. He isn't a toddler any more. Still, I'm having a hard time coming up with a good name for him. I'll keep working on that.
So, today, he opened a few presents in the morning and the rest this afternoon after his brothers got home from school. Some friends came over and we had cake and ice cream. Our friends gave him a bag of chips. He loves chips. It was a perfect present for him. They also gave him a transformer car and with no planning, I got him two more of the same kind of car. Amazingly, we got all different ones and now he is having a great time crashing his transformers. That's what you're suppose to do with them. Who ever created those knew what 3 year olds loved. It is perfect.
Well, tonight for dinner is chicken nuggets, currently his favorite food. They smell like they are done and I had better get those out of the oven.

productive chaos
As we prepare to move two weeks from yesterday, I have been keeping quite busy.
First, I must say congratulations to my sister, who had her third baby on October 29. It is a beautiful little girl, from the pictures I've seen and I can't wait to meet her.
My Mom, an amazing woman, came to visit this last week. We had an extremely busy week and quite a few laughs too. We were going to do a lot of yard work, but the weather didn't permit that, so we stayed indoors. We did some major projects like, painting the computer room, spray painting all the ceilings downstairs, and tiling the kitchen and dining room floor. We did countless of smaller projects like repairing toilet paper rolls that had broken, replacing toilet seats, putting up new shower curtains, and lots of deep cleaning that needed done. A million loads of laundry were done, at least 10 trips to Lowes were made, several Wal-Mart trips and a visit to my son's school where he received student of the month. We stayed up until 10:30 most nights working on stuff for a few hours after the kids went to bed. It was lots of fun and lots of work. I learned how to do a few things and I learned how NOT to do many more things. The step ladder became my best friend and I carried it all over the house, all of the time. We used at least 5 cans of white paint, 3 paint rollers, 20 plastic sheets to cover things while we painted, and we each wore out a very tacky work outfit. Mom got a pair of pink nurses pants and a purple t-shirt. I wore my pink Winnie The Pooh PJ top and blue pants. More people saw me in my PJ's this week than I care to admit to.
We learned that two sleep deprived women high on the fumes from Goo Gone are clever enough and capable enough for anything. We had some very creative moments. Overall, the week was extremely productive. Unfortunately, I still have a great deal to do. The kitchen floor tile isn't quite done, but it will be by the end of today. The outside still needs a good deal of work, but we are waiting for better weather next week. The inside of the house is pretty messy with all the stuff from our projects and all the things that are out of place while we've worked. I need to get over to the storage room, empty it and bring everything back to the house.
I still don't know what to do about selling or renting the house, but time is short. I leave my home two weeks from yesterday. Whatever happens will happen. As my favorite actress, Doris Day, would sing: "Que sera, sera. What will be, will be."

Please Election Day, come soon
I'm so, so, so, so tired of all the election stuff. I was tired of it a year ago. Now, as we are down the those last few days, I am (as I'm sure many are) getting bombarded by ads, phone calls, people knocking on the door telling me what bad things the other guy is doing and how I should support them.
Yesterday I got five glossy political ads in the mail. Today I got five more.
Well, if these guys didn't send out all these dumb ads, they would save a few trees and be more "green" as it is popular among politicians to be and the money they would save on paper, printing and postage could be put towards this struggling economy they say they care about and really boost it.
I'll just be so glad when it is all over next Wednesday. I have my pick, but really, I just want to see it end. I want to see them quit talking and start doing.
And please, stop sending me ads!

Getting ready for the upcoming craziness
Holiday season has begun. I just love fall. It is a holiday to me the first time you have pumpkin bread and hot chocolate for breakfast. I usually go pumpkin crazy in October, but this year, I'm trying to clean out the pantry and I only had one can of pumpkin. One can, so many baking possibilities. I made bread.
Our church had their Halloween carnival (trunk-or-treat) already. It was lots of fun, but a bit disorganized. The kids just loved running about in their costumes. There were 5 Indiana Joneses. I brought three of them - my two older boys and a friend. My youngest son refused to wear his costume, that I sewed for him! What gratitude, I must say. Well, that's a two year old.
Speaking of the two year old, who I have referred to as Toddler on this blog will be turning 3 in a few weeks. Toddler no longer fits him at all, I really need to think of a new blog name for him. Maybe I'll just call him Whiner since that is what he seems to do a lot of right now.
Something funny right now, my oldest son has a cough and Peanut thinks it is just hilarious. She is squealing with laughter every time he coughs. It's pretty funny.
Halloween is coming up, then a couple of birthdays, the Primary Program and finally, we'll move in the end of November! We don't have anywhere to go and this might be the dumbest thing in the world, but it seems no matter what I choose now, it doesn't seem right. So, we make a choice and go with it. It's crazy.

odd
So, several nights ago, Peanut woke up and started screaming from her crib. The room where my eight year old sleeps is right next to Peanuts. As I go to get Peanut from her crib, I see my eight year old laying on the floor in the doorway fast asleep. Odd.
The next morning I asked him why was he sleeping on the floor? Did he wet his bed? Did he have a bad dream? No, he laid across the threshold of the room to keep his sister from coming in. Hmm. I don't know when she was trying to get in and I'm not sure if he stayed that way all night long. Why do we even bother buying beds and keeping clean sheets on them if he is going to sleep on the floor.
Well, Princess got told the next day to please stay out of the boys room at night. I don't think there has been a problem since.

mind fog
Wow, I had something I was going to blog about, but then when I sit down to do it, my mind goes totally blank. Hmmm....

Hats
My two oldest boys have decided they want to be Indiana Jones for Halloween. Cool! The costume is harder to find than I would have imagined though. I'm not buying an Indiana Jones (IJ) costume from the store, but I'm searching thrift stores for possibilities. Well, I did come up with the hat,and that is the most important part of the costume. I found them at the dollar store on Friday. My boys have not taken off those hats since I got them. We went to a church activity on Saturday, they wore their hats, when they both came down the stairs this morning for breakfast, they were wearing their hats. My oldest son is 10. He is on the verge of leaving childhood. He wants to be treated older and I'm kind of sad to see him grow out of this stage of life. I'm excited for the young adult that he will become, but part of me just wants to keep my first born a kid forever. But this morning, when he came down in his IJ hat, my heart lept. Part of him is still a kid! Then again, part of me is still a kid, too.
